“The Afters” sing a great song about how it’s a good thing we’re not God, we’re not the Savior of the world because we couldn’t do, wouldn’t do all that He does for mankind. He shows mercy when we would just as soon write someone off for ticking us off. He loves even when we turn our backs on Him, spit in His face in anger or shrug in apathy. He forgives when we tend to hold grudges. He gives second, third, fourth, fifteenth, and hundredth chances when we give up on people after a few offenses.
Thank God, I’m not the one! The world would be in trouble with such a fickle, weak, limited deliverer. There is a God and it’s not me. Or you.
Thank God that He IS the One. Jesus is the One who can give true freedom, lasting hope, resilient joy, paradoxical strength in our weakness, and the purest of all loves. He is the only One who could buy us back and save us by giving His life. He is the One whose love outlasts anger, hurt, infidelity, and just plain human nature.
He is the One with enough wisdom and knowledge to plan out entire lives, orchestrate incredible circumstances and just-at-the-right-time encounters. He is the One who is all good and no evil. He’s holy, pure light with no darkness. He is the One who is ever faithful. He is the One who exudes patience, listening to us cry out, allowing us to vent and shake our fists in frustration over having to wait or deal with tough times.
We mess up, but that doesn’t mean we’re lost. He still works things out for good. He gently grabs our shoulders and turns us back toward His way, His path – like we might do to a toddler who starts walking toward something they’re not supposed to touch. “Not that way,” He says. “Try again.” He never gets weary of turning us again and again back to the right way…because He loves.
Do you know Him? You can know Him as much as you would like. He knows you. Whether or not you believe in Him, He believes in you. He never has and never will give up on you, get disgusted with you, grow tired of you. He holds out his hands and in them are life and love, forgiveness, peace, and a future.
He alone can meet every need you ever have. He can fill that place in your heart that is never really satisfied by anything or anyone else. I sure can’t do that, neither can any other person or thing. I can’t save you or anyone, but Jesus can.
Thank God, I’m not the one. Thank God that He is.
When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. 7 Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. 8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. 9 And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. 10 For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. 11 So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.
